I've been playing and modding guitars, and repairing and modding tube amps, for decades now. Long enough that some days I wonder if I'm too old for this — my back certainly thinks so after an afternoon hunched over a chassis. But the truth is, the itch never went away. If anything, it got sharper.
What the Community Taught Me
Somewhere along the way, this stopped being just a hobby I did on weekends and became something closer to a second trade. Every amp that came across my bench taught me something a book couldn't. Every strange fault, every “that shouldn't be possible” reading on the multimeter, every mod that worked better than it had any right to — it all added up. And with retirement from my day job getting closer, that second trade is starting to look like what I do next.
And I didn't learn it alone. A huge part of what I know today about vintage guitar amps came from the online tech community: forums full of people who'd seen the exact fault you were staring at, and a whole generation of YouTube techs — creators like Psionic Audio, The Guitologist, and Uncle Doug — who were generous enough to film themselves thinking out loud with the chassis open. That kind of knowledge-sharing is rare, and I owe a lot of what I can do to it.
The Gap No One Filled
But here's the thing that kept nagging at me. As my own reference library grew — bias calculations scribbled on paper, resistor color codes I'd long since memorized but still second-guessed, tone stack values I'd look up in three different places — I kept running into the same problem. There wasn't one place that had it all.
Rob Robinette's site came the closest, and I have real respect for what he built; it's been a reference point for me and for half the amp-tech community. But even that didn't cover everything I needed, day to day, on the actual bench.
Building It Anyway
So the tools I was building for myself — the calculators, the decoders, the quick-reference guides — started to feel less like scattered notes and more like something worth shaping into a real resource. Not a rehash of what already existed, but the toolkit I actually wished I'd had when I was starting out, and honestly still wish I had some days now, twenty amps into a repair week.
It started as a physical need — my own — that I kept solving over and over until I realized I should just build it properly, once.
That's the honest origin of DiMastro GTA. It didn't start as a business plan. What It Is Today
Today it's grown into something I use myself, every single day: bias calculators, tone stack tools, resistor and capacitor decoders, technical guides, and write-ups pulled straight from real repairs and real mistakes.
It's not finished — a site like this never really is, because tube amps keep surprising you no matter how long you've been at it — but it's built from the bench outward, not from a marketing brief inward. Everything on it earns its place because I needed it first.
