DIY Cap Discharge Tool
A portable discharge stick for bringing any amp's filter capacitors down to a safe voltage before you ever put your hands inside.
This is not the same thing as the Power Cap Bleeder Guide. That guide covers a resistor permanently wired inside one specific amp. This is a standalone, portable hand tool you carry from amp to amp — the thing you actively use, on every single chassis you open, regardless of whether that amp has a working internal bleeder or not.
DANGER: You are about to build a tool whose entire purpose is to intentionally contact lethal DC voltage. Every joint must be fully insulated, the handle must be non-conductive, and you should never hold both probe ends yourself while a node is live. This tool reduces risk — it does not eliminate it. Always follow up with a meter to confirm 0V.
Why a Handheld Tool, Not Just Trust in the Amp's Own Bleeder
- Factory and installed bleeders fail. They fail open more often than techs expect, silently, with no outward sign — the amp looks and works completely normal right up until someone assumes it's safe and it isn't.
- Not every amp has one. Plenty of vintage and cheaply-built amps never had a bleeder at all. A portable tool doesn't care what's inside — it works the same way on every chassis.
- It's faster and more controlled than improvising with a random resistor and loose alligator clips every time, and it's far safer than the old trick of shorting a screwdriver across the terminals (which can weld the tip to the terminal and throw sparks and molten metal).

Construction Steps
- Wire the resistor between the two leads. Solder one length of high-voltage insulated wire to each end of the discharge resistor, running out to your two probe tips or alligator clips.
- Add the neon indicator. Wire it, with its own appropriately sized dropping resistor, in parallel with the main discharge resistor so it lights whenever voltage is present across the tool's two leads.
- Fully insulate every joint. Heat-shrink or epoxy every solder joint completely — this tool exists specifically to touch live high voltage, so there is zero tolerance for exposed metal anywhere except the very probe tips.
- Mount everything inside the handle. Route the leads out through strain-relieved openings so tugging on a clip can't pull a joint loose or apply mechanical stress the solder wasn't meant to handle.
- Clearly mark the resistor value and voltage rating on the tool itself, so you always know what you're working with.
How to Use It
- With the amp unplugged, clip the ground lead to chassis ground first.
- Touch or clip the other lead to the B+ node (the highest-voltage filter cap terminal in the supply).
- Hold in place until the neon indicator goes dark, or for several seconds past when you'd expect a full discharge based on the calculator above.
- Always confirm with a meter afterward. The discharge tool is not itself a verification instrument — read actual 0V on a DMM before touching anything else.
