An essential bench instrument for any serious tube amp tech. This unit protects your investment by placing an incandescent lamp in series with the AC mains, choking down fault currents while adding a convenient bypass switch and digital monitoring displays.

DANGER: This device deals directly with lethal AC mains voltage (120V/240V). Build inside an insulated, non-conductive enclosure with proper chassis earth grounding, secure wire routing, and fused AC input protection.

Construction & Wiring Blueprint

  1. AC Input Stage: Route your hot AC mains wire from the IEC socket through a 3A–5A slow-blow panel fuse, then through your Master On/Off toggle switch. Tie the neutral line straight through, and securely bolt the safety earth ground directly to any metal internal chassis or grounding block.
  2. The Bypass Matrix: Wire your Bypass switch such that in position one, the Hot line is forced through the incandescent lamp socket (standard traditional bulb ratings like 60W or 100W old-school tungsten work best). In position two, the switch bypasses the lamp entirely, feeding unmitigated mains power straight to the output outlet for final testing.
  3. Meter Integration: Connect the current transformer coil or internal sensing leads of your digital AC voltmeter/ammeter module in series with the outgoing hot wire feeding the load receptacle, ensuring accurate real-time draw metrics.
  4. Testing the Unit: Always plug the limiter into a GFCI-protected outlet and test with a known dummy load (like a standard incandescent desk lamp) before plugging in an expensive guitar amplifier.
